It represents a step forward in research into urban adaptation strategies in response to emerging climate and ecological crises.<\/em><\/h3>\n\n<p><a href=\"\/en\/althenia-sando\" title=\"Althenia Sando. Integral environmental services\" target=\"_blank\">Althenia Sando<\/a> has launched the second phase of its pioneering research project, <em>Evaluation and Promotion of Ecosystem Services Provided by Urban Trees<\/em> II (SERVECO II), which aims to quantify the capacity of urban green spaces to mitigate the effects of climate change.   <\/p>\n\n<p>Building on the success of SERVECO I, this new R&amp;D&amp;I initiative is supported by funding from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corporaciontecnologica.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Andalusian Technological Corporation (CTA)<\/a> and developed in collaboration with the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uma.es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> University of M\u00e1laga (UMA)<\/a>, through the RNM-262 Biogeography, Diversity and Conservation research group, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wdtech.io\/\">WDTECH<\/a>, a tech firm specialising in advanced IoT solutions. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Sustainability, Pollution and Climate Change<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n<p>The project led by <a href=\"\/en\/althenia-sando\" title=\"Integral environmental services\" target=\"_blank\">Althenia<\/a> Sando expands ongoing research into how cities can adapt to the challenges posed by climate and ecological crises, in line with the company\u2019s ESG strategy and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n\n<p>SERVECO II will assess the role of green spaces in delivering so-called Ecosystem Services that help mitigate the effects of pollution and climate change. Building on the findings from the initial phase, the project sets out to achieve five key goals: <br\/>&#8211; Identify vulnerable urban areas <br\/>&#8211; Assess the value of land covered by vegetation <br\/>&#8211; Monitor the extent of urban sprawl <br\/>&#8211; Detect urban heat islands <br\/>&#8211; Evaluate overall urban climate comfort <\/p>\n\n<p>As Juan Antonio B\u00e1ez, Director of Sando\u2019s R&amp;D department, explains, cutting-edge technology will play a vital role in this second phase: \u201cNext-generation sensors will enable real-time monitoring of environmental variables such as pollutants, humidity levels, and temperature. In addition, we\u2019ll apply advanced geospatial data technologies\u2014including laser scanning and ultra-high-resolution satellite imagery\u2014to capture detailed physical parameters of urban trees.\u201d B\u00e1ez credits CTA\u2019s support in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sando.com\/en\/actualidad\/tree-planting-urban-sando-cta-uma-serveco-althenia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SERVECO <\/a>I as pivotal: \u201cThe backing of CTA in the first phase was crucial to advancing this new stage of research, which now pursues even broader goals with the potential to help mitigate climate change.\u201d <\/p>\n\n<p>Carlos Garc\u00eda, Head of Building and Civil Works at CTA, highlights the European relevance of such initiatives: \u201cSERVECO II moves forward along a path that is increasingly prioritised and supported by the European Union\u2014quantifying and evaluating the ecosystem services offered by what we call \u2018green infrastructure\u2019.\u201d He adds that this valuation is essential\u2014not only for more accurate cost-benefit analysis and a better understanding of positive environmental impacts but also for demonstrating the compensatory effects of green infrastructure on urban development projects.
