The president of the Junta de Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, has inaugurated the section, allowing the Malaga Metro to reach the historic centre. A civil works infrastructure executed by Sando Construcción in a joint venture.
The arrival of the metro in the centre of Malaga means the completion of line 1 and the commissioning of two new stations: Guadalmedina and Atarazanas. The Guadalmedina station is the largest of all Andalusian metro stations, with a depth of 26 metres, a 2,800 m2 concourse and two underground platform levels. For its execution, 120,000 cubic metres of earth were extracted.
The opening ceremony was also attended by the Regional Minister for Development, Territorial Planning and Housing, Marifrán Carazo, the Mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, the Government Delegate in Andalusia, Pedro Fernández, and the Government Delegate in Malaga, Patricia Navarro, among other authorities.
Sando has developed several research projects within the joint venture that have materialised the project. Among them is the Technological Innovation in R&D&I certification for designing a construction method to safeguard archaeological remains found during construction.
As a construction company, Sando is the only company that has participated in all underground sections of the Malaga Metro project with various consortiums.
Likewise, last year, the Demarcation of Andalusia, Ceuta and Melilla of the Association of Civil Engineers (CICCP) approved awarding the Best Andalusian Public Work prize to the Malaga Metro. Valuing innovation applied to the execution of infrastructure in civil works.
