Waste derived from human activity in industries and population centres, whether urban or rural, often has a negative environmental impact and is the cause of water pollution in rivers and aquifers, the sea, air and soil. Applying the best available techniques and innovating technologically to achieve efficient and sustainable waste management is essential in this environment.

The characteristics of the waste determine the possible treatments and techniques for its removal, reuse or storage. The types of waste include: organic waste, mainly from food; metals, electronic and technological waste; plastics and packaging; waste from construction activities; and other types of waste, such as textiles and glass. Most of these wastes are non-toxic, but some wastes’ effects on health and the environment can be particularly harmful and, therefore, require specialised management, such as chemicals or sludge from sewage treatment plants.
