Green spaces in urban centres are designed to provide open and green spaces in cities. Types of green spaces in cities include neighbourhood, district, metropolitan or peri-urban parks and gardens; theme parks and gardens; or historic gardens and green wedges.
These green spaces perform an essential ornamental and landscape service but also contribute to improving the urban microclimate and regulating and reducing noise. They are also genuine air-purifying lungs and carbon sinks, absorbing part of the CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. Because of this, the transformation of the geography of urban green spaces in Spain has been one of the most significant changes in recent decades in terms of urban planning.
