Althenia Sando is part of the project led by the Environment Department of Leganés to plant 700 trees over the coming months. As the company responsible for part of the maintenance, conservation, and replacement of green areas in the municipality, Althenia Sando contributes to this initiative by enhancing green spaces, promoting biodiversity, and supporting environmental well-being within the area.
This campaign has been driven by several community planting events, with Althenia Sando actively involved. The first event took place on March 26, the second on March 27, in collaboration with IES Siglo XXI, and the most recent took place this past weekend at the Parque de la Hispanidad.
In the latest event, celebrated as a spring kick-off festival, residents helped plant various species, such as Melia azedarach, Morus alba, Quercus ilex, Olea europea, and Prunus dulcis. For the occasion, Althenia Sando organised a gardening machinery exhibition and facilitated the preparation of the land, provided personnel, and distributed the necessary plants to carry out the event, as well as giving away 250 kitchen plants to attendees.
During the first weeks of March, Althenia Sando planted trees in several locations across Leganés. The newly planted trees now beautify streets such as Zamora, Juan Muñoz, Nápoles, and Avenida de Fuenlabrada, the Plataforma del Lago in Vereda de los Estudiantes, and areas in the Ensanche de San Nicasio, Las Vírgenes, and Los Santos.
The professionals at Althenia Sando have worked with various tree species, including Ligustrum japonicum, Platanus hispanica, Melia azedarach, Koelreuteria paniculata, Cupressus sempervirens, Celtis australis, Albizia julibrissum, Hibiscus syriacus, and Robinia pseudoacacia. They have also removed stumps from over 100 tree pits that had remained occupied.
As stated by Leganés Town Hall, this project reinforces the municipality’s commitment to environmental Sustainability and the quality of life for its residents. The new trees will enhance the urban environment and contribute to improving air quality by capturing CO2 and providing shade in public spaces.
Althenia Sando is carrying out this project in line with its sustainability strategy, contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and the 2030 Agenda. Specifically, it supports SDG 11, which aims to make cities more inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable; SDG 13, which calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; and SDG 15, which focuses on conserving life on land.
