The Mayor of El Puerto de Santa María, Germán Beardo, has highlighted the efforts of Cemuproan, the Municipal Animal Protection Centre, which is managed by Althenia Sando. Over the past year, care for feline colonies was doubled and 344 adoptions were carried out.
As reported by the City Council, the Mayor reviewed the centre’s progress and congratulated the team during a visit to the facilities. In 2024, a total of 344 adoptions were achieved, providing new opportunities and a home for 83 dogs and 261 cats—19 more adoptions than in the previous year. “This centre is a pioneer in Andalusia in the management of animal intake, operating under a zero-euthanasia policy. It is also a benchmark in fostering and adoption, always ensuring the well-being of every animal,” stated Germán Beardo.
A total of 504 lost or abandoned animals were also taken in: 91 dogs and 413 cats.
Of these, 21 dogs and 3 cats were reunited with their owners.
The Cemuproan centre in El Puerto de Santa María has capacity for over 100 animals. Althenia Sando is responsible for managing the centre and its facilities, which include a fully equipped operating theatre, three veterinary surgeons, nine staff members, and dozens of volunteers.
The centre is currently operating at full capacity. In fact, in the first two months of this year alone, 233 cats have already been sterilised. In 2024, a total of 281 cats from urban colonies were sterilised under the Capture, Neuter and Return (CNR/CER) programme, which also includes health screening for feline leukaemia and immunodeficiency viruses.
This figure represents a remarkable increase compared to 2023, when 136 sterilisation procedures were performed—an overall rise of 106.6% (an additional 145 cats). This growth has been made possible by improvements introduced through the new contract launched in September, managed by concession-holder Althenia Sando. The updated service has extended veterinary hours and added capacity specifically aimed at increasing sterilisation of feral cats.
Cemuproan combines animal intake with rehoming through adoption. To support this, it organises events and activities to promote adoption in shopping centres and across social media platforms (website, Facebook). This work is made possible thanks to the collective efforts of staff, volunteers, partner organisations and foster families.
As part of its Sustainability Master Plan, Althenia Sando supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and in particular SDG 15, which aims to promote the sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems.
