Althenia Sando will carry out a new reforestation plan launched by the Malaga City Council, through the Environmental Sustainability Area. The company specialising in environmental services will operate in the peri-urban parks of Gibralfaro and El Morlaco, areas that have been particularly affected by the removal of dry pine trees due to the progressive weakening of pine forests and forest fire prevention work.
Within the framework of this plan, the planting of 9,000 large trees and shrubs is planned, of which 6,250 will be located in Gibralfaro and 2,750 in El Morlaco. The professionals of Althenia Sando will use native species adapted to the Mediterranean climate, such as carob trees, olive trees, cypresses, hackberry trees, almond trees, pomegranate trees, oleanders, mastic trees, brooms or palm hearts, with the aim of ensuring the sustainability, resilience and adaptation of the new plant masses.
The tasks included in this plan include the preparation of the land, digging holes, distribution and planting of species, protection, irrigation and actions aimed at promoting rooting. The interventions will be scheduled according to the weather and the rainfall regime. These works are included in the framework agreement with the consistory.
The main objective is to create a tree cover that accelerates the natural evolution of vegetation, improves the landscape and environmental quality of the surroundings and contributes to biodiversity.
In line with the Sando Sustainability Master Plan, the expected benefits include the reduction of erosion, the creation of new habitats for fauna, the improvement of the hydrological cycle, the recovery of degraded areas, the decrease in temperatures and the increase in CO₂ capture and oxygen production.
