The new Oncohaematology Day Hospital in Málaga, located at the Virgen de la Victoria University Hospital, has opened its doors following its inauguration by the President of the Government of Andalusia, Juan Manuel Moreno.
Sando Construcción, through its specialised healthcare projects division, has delivered works that have tripled the facility’s space and capacity, with an investment of €5 million.
According to the Government of Andalusia, the new Oncohaematology Day Hospital at the Málaga University Hospital now offers double the number of treatment chairs, with 31 units, as well as 12 beds for treatment and a further four in independent isolation rooms. The facility also includes 16 oncology consulting rooms and eight haematology consulting rooms. In addition, it features a new in-house pharmacy service for the safe preparation, dispensing and distribution of treatments.
The expansion was achieved through the construction of new external modules and two connecting walkways, separated by a central lightwell to improve circulation and natural daylight, linking the new areas with the rest of the hospital building.
The new facilities, built using a special foundation system with in-situ drilled micropiles, are complemented by an independent street-level entrance, staircases and a stretcher-accessible lift providing direct access to the hospital’s first floor.
The construction of the new Oncohaematology Day Hospital incorporates measures aimed at optimising the quality of patient care, comfort and service delivery. As part of the humanisation of healthcare spaces, Sando Construcción installed two fully adapted bathrooms for ostomy patients, as well as a DALI lighting system that allows individual control of each luminaire, reducing energy consumption and improving visual comfort.
To enhance natural lighting in internal corridors, tubular skylights were installed to channel daylight from the roof. In addition, a dedicated control system with specialised software was implemented to enable centralised, remote management of the air-conditioning and ventilation systems across the different areas.
The works were carried out while the Málaga University Hospital remained fully operational, without disrupting healthcare services. For the deep foundations of the new facilities, Sando Construcción deployed specialised heavy-duty equipment operating both from outside and within the existing building.
