Sando Construcción, the contractor responsible for the rehabilitation works on the Fuentenueva University swimming pool in Granada, continues to make progress on this project promoted by the Regional Government of Andalusia, through the Public Works Agency, with the support of the University of Granada.
The initiative, part of the compensatory measures for the Granada Metro works, aims to recover a key sports facility that had been out of use for more than a decade.
The project includes the comprehensive refurbishment of the 50‑metre Olympic swimming pool, featuring waterproofing of the basin, porcelain stoneware tiling, and the installation of a laminated timber structure supporting a removable textile roof. This technical solution, proposed by Sando Construcción, will improve energy efficiency in winter while ensuring proper ventilation during the summer months.
The choice of timber for the structure is suitable for both outdoor use and high‑humidity environments, such as an indoor pool in winter. The wooden framework gives structural consistency to the pool complex, forming a gallery‑like observation space alongside the pool, and replacing a previously demolished grandstand.
The project also involves the refurbishment of the adjoining building, which will house new changing rooms, a reception area, multipurpose spaces and fully accessible entrances. The redevelopment of the surrounding area will enhance accessibility and modernise the outdoor space with new paving, urban furniture and landscaped areas.
During construction, Sando Construcción has tackled several technical challenges, including the repair and reinforcement of the building’s original structure, which had sustained significant damage. These works required the development of a structural solution approved by the Public Works Agency.
This week, an institutional visit was held, led by Rocío Díaz, Regional Minister for Development, Land Planning and Housing, together with Pedro Mercado, Rector of the University of Granada, and Marifrán Carazo, Mayor of Granada. Also attending were Montserrat Zamorano, Vice‑Rector for Infrastructure, and representatives of both the Regional Government and the City Council.
The works are now in an advanced phase, including masonry, façade closures, floor conditioning and preparation of the pool basin for final lining. Completion is scheduled for 2026 returning to Granada, a sports facility designed to serve both the university community and the general public.
This project is aligned with Sando’s Sustainability Master Plan and with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, particularly SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well‑being).
